Please refer to our transcription below if it is easier and/or more convenient for you:
Every couple begins life together with the hope to live happily ever after but the number of married people in America is declining. In 1960, 72% of adult Americans were married. By 2012 that number had declined to 51% or just half of the population. Divorce, death, or severe disability can suddenly change your status from a partnership to a solo project.
Here are three steps to take right now that may make a difference if you find yourself suddenly single:
- Safeguard and copy important documents such as your passport, social security card, insurance policies, and other account information. Make sure that each partner has copies.
- Review life insurance policies. Have you addressed the education of children and other needs in the event of your spouse’s death?
- Make sure that both partners understand the investment accounts that are earmarked for retirement years.
These few simple steps can make all the difference when the unexpected happens. Take a few moments today to prepare to live happily ever after no matter what the future may hold.
